Weird and Fun Along Westbound I-10 Toward Phoenix
Interstate 10 cuts straight across southern Arizona, and if you are heading west, it sets you up for an easy, no-nonsense road trip. You are cutting through some of the most eccentric and scenic stretches of the Sonoran Desert. While it is easy to keep your cruise control locked and stare at the horizon, there are three distinct stops right off the highway that turn a standard drive into a full day adventure. This stretch between Dragoon, Tucson, and Picacho is not about chasing remote destinations. It is about pulling off the highway at the right moments and getting a mix of weird, scenic, and hands-on stops without ever straying far from your route.
You can do the whole thing in a single day, keep your drive simple, and still come away with something memorable.
Stop 1: The Desert’s Strangest Attraction
The Thing?
If you are driving west on I-10, you will not miss this one. The billboards start early and do not let up. By the time you reach Exit 322 near Dragoon, curiosity usually wins.
This is a quintessential Arizona roadside attraction. Inside, The Thing? is exactly what a roadside attraction should be. It is strange, a little confusing, and fully committed to its mystery. You will move through exhibits that jump between historical artifacts, odd displays, and alien conspiracy themes, all building toward the reveal of the “Thing” itself.

Plan to spend around an hour here walking through the exhibits and taking photos. Make sure to browse the massive gift shop and grab a few road snacks before you merge back onto I-10 West.
Stop 2: A Quick View Over Tucson
Sentinel Peak
Continuing west, Tucson rises up around you, and this is your chance to get above it without much effort. Take Exit 258 and follow the road up to Sentinel Peak, known locally as A Mountain.

This is one of the easiest viewpoints in the state. You drive straight to the top, step out, and you are looking out over the entire city. Downtown, neighborhoods, and mountain ranges all stretch out in front of you. It is an ideal spot for quick photos or a midday picnic.
This stop does not take long. Thirty minutes is enough to walk around, take photos, and reset before continuing your drive. It is a clean break between stops and adds a completely different pace to the trip.

Stop 3: Hands-On Wildlife Fun Near Picacho Peak
Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch
The final leg of the trip takes you about thirty minutes further west to Exit 219 in Picacho. The Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch is located right at the foot of the jagged Picacho Peak and offers an interactive experience that is far from your typical farm visit.

Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch is built around getting up close. You can feed ostriches, donkeys, and goats, and if you step into the lorikeet enclosure, expect birds landing right on you. It is active, a little chaotic, and a solid way to end the trip.
Give yourself at least an hour here. More if you want to take your time or try everything they offer. It is a high energy way to wrap up your stops before the final hour long stretch into the Phoenix metro area.
Straightforward, Flexible, and Right Off the Highway
This itinerary is successful because it requires zero backtracking and no long detours. Every stop sits just off the freeway, so you are not dealing with long detours or complicated directions.
The variety also carries the trip. You go from a roadside mystery to a city overlook to an interactive animal stop, all within a few hours of driving. Each one feels different enough to keep the day from blending together.
It is the perfect way to break up the drive while experiencing the unique personality of Southern Arizona. You can move fast and hit all three without stress, or slow it down and spend more time at each stop. Either way, you stay on course, heading west, and letting the road do the work.
